When Are Tooth Extractions Needed?

Here are some common reasons Dr. Butler might decide on tooth extractions. Our team will exhaust every available option to retain your natural teeth.

Impacted Teeth

Impacted teeth happen when an emerging tooth is blocked from erupting through the gums due to misalignment or lack of space in the mouth. Dr. Butler typically sees impacted teeth in wisdom teeth cases; however, impacted teeth can also result from genetics and past dental trauma.

Removing impacted teeth can make a big difference to your health; even if it doesn’t cause you much pain. Leaving this issue unaddressed can block other teeth from maturing properly.

Severe Cavities

Overlooked cavities can evolve into major toothaches and dental pain. In many cases, a filling will be enough—but when the decay goes too deep, Dr. Butler might recommend getting your teeth pulled to eliminate the spread of disease.

Major Gum Disease

Gum disease is another condition that may need the help of a tooth extraction. Gum disease starts as a more minor infection called gingivitis. When the gingivitis isn’t addressed, the disease grows into a gum disease called periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a more aggressive disease that is much harder to recover from and results in loosening your teeth. Getting any loose teeth pulled can prevent the infection from spreading further. It can also give the rest of your teeth a better chance to recover and strengthen. In these cases, Dr. Butler may suggest removing a tooth and replacing it with a new crown by way of a dental bridge or implant.

Crowded Teeth

Overlapping or crowded teeth may make it difficult for you to eat certain foods or to brush and floss your teeth thoroughly at night. We may extract a tooth in a particularly crowded area of your mouth to give your other teeth space to spread out. This reason for a tooth extraction often precedes orthodontic treatment.

Oral Conscious Sedation with Tooth Removal

At Twin Peaks Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, your comfort is our priority. That’s why our team is happy to offer oral conscious sedation to make tooth extraction and wisdom teeth removal simple. Oral sedation is a pill usually taken right before the procedure to ease dental anxiety and promote relaxation throughout the extraction.

Feel free to visit our Oral Sedation page for more information about the oral sedation process.

Restoring Teeth After a Tooth Extraction

There are several options once the teeth are pulled and your gums are healed. Here are some dental prosthetics Dr. Butler might recommend:

  • Crowns: Caps for damaged teeth, providing strength and a natural look.
  • Bridges: Fill gaps from missing teeth, anchored to neighboring teeth or implants.
  • Dentures: Removable or permanent appliances for partial or complete tooth loss, restoring appearance and function.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal is a big milestone in your oral health, and we are happy to help you through it! Wisdom teeth are the molars in the back of your mouth that grow after your other adult teeth grow in. Most adults do not have space in their mouth for this final set of teeth, so wisdom teeth often cause discomfort and even dental damage if not properly removed when necessary.

There’s no set time when your wisdom teeth will come in. However, most patients tend to start wisdom teeth removal when they’re around age 16–26

Using our advanced dental technology, Dr. Butler can better pinpoint when you will need your wisdom teeth removed, and identify the smoothest way to accomplish it.

Yes, we do! Dr. Butler is highly trained in treating impacted wisdom teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth occur when the wisdom teeth can’t grow through the gums properly. This can cause your gums to become inflamed and make it hard to clean your whole mouth.

We will scan your teeth to determine how to extract the tooth in a minimally invasive way.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Aftercare

After you get your wisdom teeth pulled, you’ll be given a very specific set of aftercare instructions to follow to restore your oral health.

  • Avoid drinking from straws
  • Keep the extraction site clean
  • Rinse well after eating and drinking
  • Only use pain medication approved by Dr. Butler

Because wisdom teeth removal tends to go much deeper into your jaw than other tooth removal procedures, following these instructions is paramount to helping you heal and keeping your mouth safe from infection.
