What to Do While Waiting for Your Emergency Dental Care

We like to advise our patients on what to do right when a dental emergency happens so they can best prepare. Depending on your circumstances, you might live further away from the dentist and will need to protect your teeth as you are heading to the dentist.

Call Dr. Butler Immediately

Dental emergencies need to be treated as promptly as possible. Our office will do our best to fit you in as soon as we are able.

Be Prepared

Use warm water to gently rinse the area of any dirt to reduce pain or swelling. Ice packs and ibuprofen are also helpful to keep your pain minimal.

Protect Knocked-Out Teeth (if applicable)

Placing a dislodged tooth in a glass of milk can help protect the tooth. Dr. Butler may be able to reattach the tooth in this state.

Common Dental Emergencies

Urgent dental care can include many problems—here we’ve listed the most common ones we see. If you need an extra opinion on your dental pain, feel free to give us a call and see if your symptoms denote an emergency. It is always better to be safe than sorry!

Severe Toothache

Many patients experience toothaches that originate from dental decay or common accidents. In these situations, Dr. Butler can perform a cleaning to get the painful bacteria out of your system. In more serious cases, our office offers fillings or crowns to restore the function of your teeth!

Chipped Tooth

Immediate treatment for a chipped tooth is crucial to prevent further damage or infection. At our office, we can help restore your tooth and protect it from bacteria with many options including dental bonding, veneers, or crowns.

Cracked or Broken Teeth

Teeth are powerful but not invincible. Poor oral health, eating hard foods, and even old age can cause a cracked tooth or a fully broken tooth. Dr. Butler will closely analyze your teeth to determine a restoration solution that will best address your needs and quickly restore your health.

Facial Trauma/Injury

Teeth often take the brunt of accidents or athletic injuries. If you have a critically broken tooth or cracked tooth, call Dr. Butler right away. Our team is skilled in efficiently preventing further damage and quality emergency dentistry to replace any missing teeth.

If you are experiencing significant jaw damage (especially if it blocks your airways), call 911 to receive direct attention.

Tooth Knocked Out

For a knocked-out tooth, emergency treatment is vital to possibly reimplant the tooth successfully. On your way to our office for your urgent dental care, keep the dislodged tooth moist in either your cheek or a small jar of milk. This can increase the chances of saving the tooth.

Once you get here, Dr. Butler will closely examine the affected area and determine the best way to possibly save your tooth. If the knocked-out tooth was damaged too much, he may recommend replacing the tooth with a dental prosthetic instead.

Abscess

A dental abscess often feels like a large bump or pimple-like spot on your gums—especially around your tooth roots. It can often be the cause of a major toothache. Dental abscesses require urgent dental care to prevent the spread of infection, which can be threatening to your overall health.

Loose or Dislodged Tooth

Dr. Butler and our dedicated team prioritize urgent action for loose or dislodged teeth. We may splint the affected tooth to neighboring ones for enhanced stability, or consider a root canal procedure if there’s nerve damage. Our goal is always to preserve your natural tooth and safeguard your oral health from further complications.

Excessive Bleeding in the Mouth

Major dental infections, hard falls, or a badly broken tooth may result in your gums bleeding beyond control. In these cases, it is best to schedule an emergency dentistry appointment with Dr. Butler to keep these symptoms in control.

I’m so impressed with Twin Peaks Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. I was in between dentists, and started having a tooth flare up. I was unable to get in to the dentist during the Holidays and by the time I saw Dr. Butler, I was hurting with an infection. He was able to get me in, diagnose the problem, and work me into the schedule that day to provide the much needed treatment. Both Dr. Butler and all of his staff were so kind, gentle and helpful. I am very grateful for them and to have found my new dentist! I highly recommend Dr. Butler and Twin Peaks Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, they are awesome.

Dr. Butler did a beautiful job filling in two chipped teeth from a recent fall. You woud never know they were chipped! I’m so grateful to Dr. Butler and his staff for taking such good care of my teeth and my smile! 🙂

Frequently Asked Questions | Emergency Dental Care

Do you accept walk-in dental emergencies in Longmont?

While we do our absolute best to accommodate walk-in emergencies at our Longmont dental office during business hours, we highly recommend that you call us first at 303-774-8300. Calling ahead allows Dr. Butler and our team to prepare a treatment room for you and give you immediate over-the-phone advice on how to manage your pain or injury while you are on your way to our office. We offer same-day emergency appointments to get you out of pain as quickly as possible.

The cost of an emergency dental visit depends entirely on the severity of your situation and the type of treatment required to fix it (such as a simple filling versus an emergency tooth extraction or root canal). During your emergency exam, Dr. Butler will assess the issue and provide a transparent, upfront cost estimate before any treatment begins. We accept many dental insurance plans and offer flexible financing options to ensure you can get the urgent dental care you need without financial stress.

If you have a tooth knocked out, time is of the essence! Follow these steps immediately to increase the chances of saving your tooth:

  1. Handle it by the crown: Only touch the chewing surface of the tooth. Never touch the root.

  2. Rinse it gently: If the tooth is dirty, rinse it with water or milk. Do not scrub it or use soap.

  3. Keep it moist: Try to gently slip the tooth back into the socket. If that isn’t possible, keep it moist by placing it in a small container of milk or tucked inside your cheek (if you are an adult).

  4. Call us immediately: Contact Twin Peaks Family & Cosmetic Dentistry at 303-774-8300 right away. For the best chance of saving the tooth, you should ideally see an emergency dentist within 30 to 60 minutes.
